With the release of “ZUKO!,” his eagerly awaited fifth studio album, Fireboy DML, one of Nigeria’s creative Afrobeats artists signed to YBNL Nation, has caught the attention of fans and music lovers.

Over the years, Fireboy DML has built a name for himself through his smooth voice, love songs, and ability to explore different sounds. His fourth studio album, “adedamola,” arrived in August 2024 with 14 tracks and featured respected artists such as Seun Kuti, Lojay, Lagbaja, Jon Batiste, and Spinall. The album showed his willingness to work with artists from different music backgrounds while keeping his own style. After that release, he joined forces with Nigerian singer and record producer Pheelz on “Peace by Piece,” a five-track collaborative project that gave fans more music from the two talented artists. Now, two years after “adedamola,” Fireboy returns with “ZUKO!” as his fifth studio album, with a sound that feels bigger and more varied than his earlier releases.

One thing that stands out on “ZUKO!” is the way Fireboy’s smooth singing blends with rich music arrangements, backing vocals, and electronic sounds. Even the softer songs have a full sound, while the dance tracks still leave room for his voice to shine. The album also touches on faith, love, hard times, and the need to keep going when life becomes difficult. Production credits go to talented record producers David Forlu, Judah Earl, Reward Beatz, Ramii, Arieenati, Black Culture, NXRTH, JAZZWRLD, Dot Da Denius, Big Fish, Yung Willis, and Aifo, who each contribute to the album’s sound.

The album opens with “DEAR FATHER,” featuring American record producer Judah Earl. The song begins on a hopeful note, as Fireboy calls on God for strength and help through life’s struggles. It sets the mood for the album and introduces one of its main themes, faith in difficult times. At number two, he follows with “BY FIRE!”, a more direct and forceful song where he speaks against his enemies. The difference between the two opening tracks shows how the singer moves from a quiet prayer to a bold expression of faith.

Track three, “CLAAT!”, features talented Jamaican dancehall artist Masicka. Released before the album, the song helped build anticipation for the full project. Its dancehall sound give listeners a more lively moment, while Masicka adds his own style to the song. Skilled record producer Ramii handled its production.

At track four, Fireboy teams up with popular Nigerian singer and songwriter Lojay on “GODDESS,” a romantic Afropop song with a tropical touch. The two artists have worked together before, as Lojay appeared on “Letting Go,” the fifth track from Fireboy’s fourth studio album, “adedamola.” Their reunion on “GODDESS” gives fans another chance to hear their styles come together. Fireboy then presents “C’EST LA VIE” at number five before moving to “IMALI” at track six, featuring talented South African music acts JAZZWRLD and Thukuthela. The song was his last release before the album arrived, giving fans an early taste of what to expect. Its production also draws from South Africa’s growing 3-step sound.

The seventh track, “ONE MAN REGIMENT,” sees Fireboy explore a mix of R&B and electronic dance music. The production has a danceable sound but does not take attention away from his smooth voice. At number eight, he presents “KILOWI,” followed by “ONAZO!” at track nine. These songs continue the album’s mix of sounds and give listeners more ways to enjoy Fireboy’s music beyond his well-known romantic style.

Track ten, “SEX LOVE UNDERSTANDING TRUST,” takes a softer approach, with an airy R&B sound that allows Fireboy’s vocals to stand out. He continues this style on “LIGHT OF DAWN,” the eleventh track, where his smooth delivery remains at the centre of the song. Both tracks show his ability to explore more relaxed sounds while keeping the music interesting and easy to listen to.

At number twelve, Fireboy presents “MIMI NAWE,” before closing the album with “FIGHTING.” The final track is a heartfelt ballad about life’s struggles and the value of having loved ones around. Its message of family, friendship, and perseverance connects with the hopeful prayer that opens the album. This gives “ZUKO!” a fitting ending, as Fireboy brings together its themes of faith, vulnerability, and the strength to keep moving forward.

Some releases get attention from people who already know the act, while others reach listeners who have never heard the name before. This new album has a chance to reach both groups and become part of more people’s music choices. Its place among your favorites will depend on what you think after you hear it.
